 Major upgrades have been completed on DamnGoodRecipes.com this summer, most notably:
- Recipe scaling.
- Unit conversions between metric and US for each recipe.
- Nutrition information.
- Holidays and occasions.
- Reorganization of the left navigation bar.
- A whole bunch of other minor things that don't deserve their own line item here.
The next set of major enhancements might focus on user functions like the recipe box, but I haven't decided yet.

| So, time permitting, I've been redoing the internals of DamnGoodRecipes.com. Quite a bit of time has spent to have the site to use a more object-oriented design, recreating entities like recipes, ingredients, articles, users...etc as PHP classes and using data access objects to handle the database queries. This does more than just make for cleaner code, which users never see or care about. So far it is paying off, by making new functionality a whole lot easier to add.

 An interesting story was sent to me by an employee of Oberlander Dorfman, Inc., an insurance brokerage house in New York. They gave a $500 mandatory (yes, mandatory) shopping spree as a holiday treat!

 So GM is now making plug-in hybrids a priority. I've always figured the big three US automakers need to reinvent themselves and offer more compelling products in order to win back US market share from Toyota. This is especially the case for Ford and GM, which had trucks and SUVs as their only real profit center. With sales of those things dropping (thankfully), those companies need to offer something really compelling.
The plug-in hybrid seems like a real viable alternative to the regular combustion engine. Regular hybrids are OK, but seems to add more a lot more complexity and definately a high price for what you get in added fuel economy. Plug-in hybrids seem a lot more compelling, especially since they can use the existing electrical grid.
GM is starting the with plug-in hybrids in the Saturn Vue, an SUV. OK, so maybe SUVs could use the fuel economy benefits more than a regular sedan, but personally, I'd rather see this improvement in lighter cars where it will make a more significant difference for those who don't want/need an SUV. Hopefully we'll get there eventually.
It's a start.

This was sort of a WTF moment... A company called Water Bank of America (seriously) is selling a product called Ice Rocks.
What is an Ice Rock, you ask?
From the company web site:
"ICE ROCKSŪ are secured ice cubes made from spring water and ready to be frozen. These cubes, to be consumed within two (2) years, are hermetically packaged in disposable, recyclable containers, providing the user with a complete guarantee with regard to hygiene and safety, while respecting the environment. ICE ROCKSŪ uses a patented technology, providing a container of refreshing ice cubes that are pure and hygienic."
Finally, there's a solution to the pesky problem of having to fill reusable ice cube trays myself with filtered tap water.
This may sound like a hard sell, but so did bottled water.
Gotta love the background music on icerocks.com, which can't be turned off.

 And the holiday madness starts again! OK, so maybe it started earlier than this, but now it's official. There is no denying that we're in the season. Shopping centers are crowded, and servers are (hopefully) humming along trying to handle all of those orders placed through websites.
There were some big sell-offs on Wall Street today. The markets have been rising since the summer, and with some investors wanting to take some profit now, the pullback is not too surprising.
Business as usual.

No one will ever know why people constantly do the following things:
1. Cut you off just to wait at the same red light.
2. Ride your *** and think that it will make you move faster (speeding is bad)
3. Honk their horn at you when you are waiting for someone to cross the cross-walk. What do they want ya to do, hit someone (for crying out loud)
There are more things but those are the top three I believe.

Last year I had received one of those chocolate fondue fountain things as a gift. Finally, I get a chance to try it out later today at a party that I am bringing it to. Sounds easy enough.... The instructions say it is best to use Belgian chocolate because it is high in cocoa butter which helps the chocolate flow (it's a fountain!). But I'll have to take the alternate route and go with standard milk chocolate chips and vegetable oil to get it flowing. Wooooooooooo fun. 2 comments

Damn. It's been over a month since I last posted here. That's not good. I've been busy, but yeah, that's not a real excuse.
Classes are going well, I think. I haven't gotten into any fights and nobody is demanding my lunch money.
Can distance students still rush a fraternity?
Just curious...
